ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

I believe that the best thing I can do as State Representative to help the economy and job creation is to limit the role of our state government in the process. Even a right-to-work, business friendly state like Tennessee has not reached it's full economic potential because of burdensome taxes, fee, and regulations,-- in particular, those taxes, fees, and regulations placed on small business owners. I would like to see us work to repeal our current professional privilege tax and replace our professional licensure process wit something more fair to those who wish to work in our state.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
What are your thoughts about a parent of a child in a low performing public school being provided a voucher equal to the amount of the state’s per-student expenditure that would be applied toward the child’s private school tuition?

I am fully supportive of parents being able to determine what is best for their children. I also take pride in listening to our teachers and administrators as they are also on the front line of educating our children.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

The most satisfying thing I have ever done is accepting Jesus Christ as my personal Savior. This is satisfying because I have assurance of a home in Heaven someday. Having Jesus in my heart makes life on earth much easier to live.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

My experiences as a former law enforcement officer helps me to see bills from the law enforcement point of view. I served on the criminal justice committee and realized my past experiences were extremely helpful in understanding the content of the bills that came before the committee. A personal quality that I have is the willingness to work with other legislators. I want to work with others to make Tennessee a great place to live, work, and play.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill that passed in the last General Assembly would you have voted against and why, or what bill that was not passed in the last General Assembly do you wish had passed and why?

Two bills that passed in the last General Assembly that I voted against are the sell of alcohol on college campuses and the sell of alcohol on Sunday. I understand that alcohol is legal but I don't think it is wise to sell it on college campuses due to the fact that it promotes the consumption of alcohol which in turn leads to dangerous situations. The alcohol sells on Sunday is just another way to take away respect from God due to the fact that alcohol can be purchased the other six days in the week.
