ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

Government does not create jobs. Advancing free enterprise & getting government obstacles out of the way helps create the climate for the private sector to create jobs .

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

I believe in parental choice in the education of their children. State government should make sure the districts have sound financing and proper accountability.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

Since serving in the Tn House of Representatives, being the House sponsor of HB0138, Individualized Savings Account for Special Needs Students was a very satisfying accomplishment. This allows parents of children with certain special needs to customize the education of their children. To know that these parents now have the opportunity & flexibility to pursue the provider that best suits their child's needs is something I am grateful to have been involved with. Along with that, the experience of working with the Tn Dept of Ed & stakeholders in writing the rules & procedures for ISAs, has also been very rewarding.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

i enjoy people and have been told I'm a good listener. I am also accessible and involved in the community. Serving on the board of directors of a non profit organization provided me the opportunity to gain expertise in areas that are interval to the duties of a legislator. Also, as the mother of four children, I have certainly handled various situations , which was perfect preparation for serving in the legislature!

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

There was a bill for a pilot program of 100 qualifying schools to implement The Leader in Me , which is incorporated into every subject & lived out wherever the students & staff go. This program teaches the "soft skills" so many employers are desperate for & according to parent testimony, has changed their parenting skills & affected, for the better, the whole family's lives. Unfortunately, the bill could not single out one program, so it was changed to , a character building program. The bill made it to finance but was not funded. A school in my district has seen dramatic improvements in discipline issues, attendance & academic achievement. I believe this program was a big part of these improvements & would like for other schools to have the opportunity to see what could happen with their students.
