ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

The state government has an important role to foster and promote economic growth throughout the state. I feel presently the administration could do more to aid the rural economies across the state. Nashville and the larger cities may be benefiting from increased job creation and growth but our rural areas are in need of more assistance. Closing state services in rural areas that local businesses and Chambers of Commerce support are counterproductive. The closure of Driver Service Centers in rural areas hinders economic growth and job creation. Bridgestone was opposed to the closure of the Warren County Driver Service Center and actions such as those are not helpful to promote economic growth and job creation.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

Testing transparency was an important accomplishment that I led the fight for in the 109th General Assembly. Legislation was passed and the Governor signed a law that I had brought to the General Assembly that enables our parents to see the questions and answers that their students are mandated to take by the state. Ever since No Child Left Behind millions of our tax dollars have been spent to have high stakes testing in our schools and parents and teachers were never given the ability to drill down and see the questions and answers students missed or got correct. I have been a classroom educator for fifteen years and this was a major accomplishment that I am proud to have led in the 109th General Assembly.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

Making a difference in the lives of others has been the most fulfilling job of being a public servant. From my service as a teacher, state representative and in my church, humbling one's self and serving others is the most fulfilling accomplishment one could endeavor to make.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

I believe in listening to all sides before making a decision or judgment as a lawmaker. I have strong core values and beliefs that I have had instilled in me since a child and my mother took me to a small country church in Rock Island. I have since been honored to serve as a Sunday School teacher and a deacon in the Church. I feel it is important to be humble, hard working and dedicated to serving my fellow citizens.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

I voted for the Bible to be our state's official book. I felt that when our nation adopted "In God We Trust" in the midst of the Cold War a half century ago that it did not violate the Establishment clause and neither would this law. We must stand strong for our values or we will be tossed to and fro in the wind.
