ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

Government does not create jobs, businesses do. I see the role of government to: (1) get out of the way of business and let capitalism and the free market operate freely, while protecting work place safety and protecting the environment. (2) government should overhaul regulations, fees, taxes, and cumbersome paperwork to lower business and governmental costs and allow businesses operate more freely. (3) provide incentives, tax relief and when necessary provide infrastructure to both recruit new businesses/jobs to Tennessee, but also focus on encouraging growth of those entities already here.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

The decay of our public education system is both alarming and has become a slow death spiral to our societal values and culture. Values should not be taught in school, that is the role of parents. Any history taught should be neutral and without bias or comment. A very biased and liberal ideology has been pushed in public schools for the 40+ years and has become very out front and unashamed during the last decade. The liberal leaning federal courts have weakened parental input and virtually eradicated conservative views from both our schools and our history. What we need in public schools is a reawakening of our American heritage and a return to proven conservative principles that built this nation and helped fuel it economic success. Additionally, we need to focus on more parental involvement and choice. We must not be afraid of change, reform and new ideas in education.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

Over the past 30 years, I’ve worked in over 200 campaigns in an effort to elect more conservatives and Republicans to public office. I’ve worked on over 19 legislative campaigns. I’ve helped to elect a lot of good people that have had significant impact on my community, state and nation. I’ve also helped my neighbors with local and personal issues. One of the most satisfying accomplishments was when I was asked to help several property owners that bordered the Stones River Battlefield. The federal government had put restrictions on how they could development and use that land in an effort to “encourage” them to sell to the government for far less money than they could in the free market. Working with Sen. Fred Thompson’s office, I was able to get those restrictions lifted and the property owners sold their land. That area is today one of the most sought after commercial growth areas in middle Tennessee – The Avenue & The Gateway. While I have worked on many issues in the past such as helping stop a state income tax, fought against a wheel tax increase, fought against numerous other local tax increase proposals and issues, the property rights issues have meant the most.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

I have nearly 30 years of experience in leadership from the Young Republicans (local and state leadership), Precinct Chairman, Republican State Executive Committee, campaign manager, civic leadership and a successful business owner. I already have established relationships with state house and state senate legislators and staff. While I have always been a pain to the establishment by holding them accountable and fighting for more openness and living by the conservative principles that define our Party, I have also earned their respect for my honesty, leadership abilities and hard work. Republicans I disagree with are not my enemies, they are my rivals. You get things accomplished by cultivating friendship, not destroying them. I’m a steadfast conservative on both fiscal policy and social issues…that doesn’t mean I can’t maintain friendship with the opposition. I have a very consistent conservative record that has been unchanged for decades.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

Out of about 1255 bills during this past session, the ones that did not pass that I would have supported are the “20 week bill”, the “bathroom bill” and depending on how it was worded the “ultra sound bill”.
