ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

I believe the state should ensure all areas of Tennessee have the infra structure and educational opportunities that support the growth of industry. It seems that most new industry is going to the same places. In the 38th district we would like to get new industry and ensure our children are prepared for those jobs when they get out of high school. Instead many of our children have to move away to areas that have jobs. The highest percentage of jobs in district 38 are self employment positions.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

I think the Federal Department fo Education should not exist. Education is a local issue that should be regulated by the state. There is way too much government oversight in education. We need a vocational tract to a high school diploma as well as a college tract. I know that in my county only 5.6% of adults over 25 have a Bachelors degree. Most of those are in the educational or medical field. So why then do all students have to take college tract courses. We need regional vocational schools. This will help us attract the new industries coming to Tennessee.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

I started the Cumberland Valley Arc, Inc. This is an organization that enhances the lives of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I have also been part of enhancing the lives of many children in my community by teaching them to be great citizens of Tennessee and the United States. I have been a foster parent and I have adopted 2 children from foster care. We have also raised 5 other children.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

I am well educated. I have an advanced degree beyond a Masters ( EdS ). I have worked in management, sales, education, and with non-profits. I grew up in a blue collar family and and I am able to find common ground with almost anyone. I am easy to talk to. I listen. I have my community at heart and want to see all of the people I represent be represented. I am open and approachable.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

If I vote on a bill I want to make sure that I understand all the ramifications of the bill. I think that sometimes we create issues. For example the bill that says a counselor dose not have to consul someone if it against their religious beliefs. That seems like it has always been an unwritten rule any ways. Who would want a counselor that did not like you or had negative feelings about you. If they did not like me because I might be gay why would I want them to do so. I would not expect a woman that did not like men to consul me either. Some things are just common sense and then we make laws that cause an issue. I thinks laws should be made that solve a problem not ones that create a problem. The same is true about the Trans gender bathroom issue. Trans genders have been around forever. We had unwritten rules that seemed to work until Pres. Obama said that transgender had to use the bathroom the identified with. Before this there was not an issue. This created an issue. The list of things like this go on and on. Just as some the questions on this form. There are no cut and dry answers. They are many shades of gey. That is why I did not answer. Many of the questions really ahve to do with how a bill is written whether or I not I could endorse or vote for it. I do believe that Insure Tennessee should have been passed. I also believe that Obamacare should be revised. It may soon get to the point that i cannot afford medical care for my family. I know there are better plans. The problem with not passing insure Tennessee is that those people who do not have insurance are going to get care even if they have to go to emergency rooms and ultimately we all pay for that. My research has also revealded that many of those that would be covered by Insure Tennessee are families of vetrans. It is a shame we are not supporting them.
