Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.
Primary responsibilities of the state include the provision of infrastructure, education and protection. Tennessee must prioritize these responsibilities as foundational. Using tax dollars and regulatory controls to pick and choose winners and losers is unacceptable. We should not allow social programs to pre-empt our responsibility to all citizens...infrastructure, education and protection... All. Foundational to economic growth and job formation.
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.
Parents have the responsibility to raise, nurture and educate their children. The State should be a servant to the parents , not their master. Parental choice and involvement is essential in the positive maturation of their children. The State should not attempt to usurp parental responsibilities and involvement. Locally elected school boards, accountable to parents, should not have to have their decisions trumped by the State Department of Education and the state board of education.
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?
Being blessed with a Husband who fully supported our decision for me to be a full time Wife, Mother and Homemaker was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. Raising our children to love God and to walk in His principals and precepts was a daily adventure and blessing! Enjoying their successes and challenges as adults is a continuation of those adventures and blessings.
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?
" The world rewards accomplishments. God rewards relationships"is a truism that I see working out in my opportunity to serve as State Senator. Being a wife,mother, homemaker and community volunteer allowed me to experience life as part of an active grassroots perspective. The relationships forged there led friends to encourage me to run for Alderman in our town....those relationships led to me being asked to serve in a Congressional office as District Director over 11 counties. Relationships formed during that time led to friends asking me to run for State Senate. Working to be part of the solution to problems and needs at the family, town and federal level has served me well in working to serve our citizens in Senate District 16 , our State and in our Constitutional interface with the federal government.
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?
SB 2329 was the "Relugious Freedom Restoration Act". It would have codified the particulars of our First Amendment Freedom of Religion with the totality of that foundational God given, constitutionally protected Liberty. I had hoped it would pass because so many of the infringements being pushed down by an overreaching federal government are undermining and eroding our Religious Freedom. This cannot be allowed to proceed. We need to restore those freedoms that have been subjects of those illegal infringements .
