ESSAY QUESTIONS
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.
Short of bank rolling economic growth & job creation from our tax revenue, I would like to see the state advocate loudly on the topic and furnish planning services to support local projects if deemed helpful & productive. I'm supportive of the state contributing to infrastructure of areas suitable for industrial development if the payback is within 5 years. There are so many details to each project that a straight-forward response is inappropriate. I do think the state should assist in creating gainful employment for our citizens, but not 100% funded by the state. Businesses are in business to make money and they too need to invest in start-up costs, albeit the state should make the decision by companies an easy decision, streamlining the process and cut out unnecessary red tape that often hampers job creation.
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.
This question is too broad to grasp the specifics of its intent. I do think the state needs more authority in respect to collaborating with the federal government. What works from a DC perspective isn't always the best Tennessee solution.
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?
Parenting my two adult daughters throughout childhood supersedes all small business accomplishments on my part. To have the pleasure of watching them play, grow, achieve, mature, graduate and start their careers has been the highlife of my life.
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?
For over 30 years I have been a small business owner, a Master's Level Psychologist, a former school board member and a community leader in addition to being a parent.
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?
I would have supported allowing electric cooperatives to provide broadband to rural areas of our state where it is currently unavailable or subpar. This would generate income opportunities for people that does not exist today. It would support our schools and industrial development. It will pass in the future and stalling the opportunity is not fair to our residents & citizens. The Chattanooga Power Board should have been able to furnish broadband services in adjoining Bradley County.
