ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

State government policies can help or hinder economic growth. The state should not pick winners and losers through legislation or policies. The state should not dictate wages or benefits to private employers. The state should not dictate business plans by forcing businesses to provide some service or feature that is outside of a legitimate concern over fraud or safety and which is backed up by actual data. I have seen too many legislators bring a bill simply because they personally don't like a product. Outside of fraud and safety concerns, the state should leave business alone. The state should facilitate safe roads, find ways to ease congestion and build projects that support economic growth such exit ramps from state highways, stronger bridges to carry heavier loads if needed or by improving narrow state roads. The state should ensure high standards for the education of the K-12 students, and use lottery funds to help both recent graduates and adults who have not completed career technical education or college education. State colleges and universities offerings should be based on areas where there is demand for employment.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
What are your thoughts about a parent of a child in a low performing public school being provided a voucher equal to the amount of the state’s per-student expenditure that would be applied toward the child’s private school tuition?

I support vouchers for children in low performing public schools.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

I am most proud of my children. We raised them in church and each is a born again Christian and each married a born again Christian. They are each now raising children of their own and have had challenges through which their faith has supported them.

Legislatively, I am very proud of my pro-life work but I think my favorite bill of all time that I have passed is the National Motto bill - a bill to display our National Motto "In God We Trust' in our public schools where the students can see it.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

I have a Bachelors of Science in economics. My background is in regulatory compliance and I work as a financial analyst. I am a very logical person, and so emotional appeals do not influence me. My husband and I owned our own business for 15 years. In my role in the state legislature I have chaired the Government Operations Committee which is the regulatory rules committee, and I also have chaired the House Consumer and Human Resources Subcommittee which is a business committee dealing with workers comp, unemployment, employment, wages, and many, many consumer matters. I also serve on the House Finance Committee and the House Ethics Committee - all at the pleasure of the Speaker. The Governor has appointed me to serve on the State Workforce Development Board and to the Launch Tennessee Board of Directors. Finally, I was elected to the Fiscal Review Committee and to the Greater Nashville Regional Council by my peers in the legislature. I am grateful that these individuals saw something in me to place me in these various roles but it is what serving in each of these roles has taught me that I value most about these several opportunities. My Christian faith guides me everyday, and I consider my work as a General Assembly member to be my Christian mission. I am not sure why God has thus moved the hearts of the voters to place me here but I do know this, I am humbly, ever grateful for the opportunity, and from day one I have been determined to never squander a moment with anything but a commitment to duty serving the people of the 57th District.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill that passed in the last General Assembly would you have voted against and why, or what bill that was not passed in the last General Assembly do you wish had passed and why?

In the last General Assembly a bill passed to allow MTSU and Tennessee State University to sell alcohol at the ball games - I voted no on the floor and in the Finance Committee. I think it is a terrible bill.
