ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

State government's role in economic growth and/or job creation is that the state is responsible for bringing in businesses that are sustainable and viable such as Amazon and Volkswagon. These companies hire many Tennesseans at a living wage and with benefits. The state is also responsible for making sure that the companies have qualified workers. In order to ensure that the companies have the workers needed to fulfill positions, Tennessee must make sure that it has a rigorous public school system to teach the basic skills students need for entry level positions and that can be built on later by the businesses.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
What are your thoughts about a parent of a child in a low performing public school being provided a voucher equal to the amount of the state’s per-student expenditure that would be applied toward the child’s private school tuition?

A parent with a child at a low performing school should not receive public money to go toward their child's tuition in a private school. Instead of taking funding from these already under funded low performing schools, the state per pupil expenditure should be increased so that these schools have adequate funding to meet student needs by having the proper materials and for hiring more highly qualified teachers. Research shows that parental involvement increases student achievement. Funding should be used to facilitate parental involvement

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

The most satisfying accomplishment that I have ever done is to earn my doctorate from Liberty University in Education Administration and Supervision. It was a personal goal for me as I had originally only earned my GED. I am the first person in my immediate family to earn a doctorate degree. In addition, I proudly display each diploma, associates degree to doctorate degree, on my classroom wall because I want my students, especially my female students, to know that earning a doctorate degree is attainable if they are willing to work hard and stay with it.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

Personal qualities that I believe will help serve me in my role as state legislator is that I am honest, hard working, and tenacious. I will be honest and do what I believe is in the best interest of my constituents instead of following party lines. Not only will I do what is in the best interest of my constituents, I will read each bill and do my own research instead of relying on what I am told before voting on a bill. If I believe that legislation is good for my constituents I will work tenaciously to get it passed, and if I believe that legislation is not good for my constituents, I will work to get it defeated.
My experience as an educator will serve me well because I see the day to day struggles that students and teachers endure. I will be better equipped to sponsor legislation to benefit our students and teachers than someone who has never taught in a public school.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill that passed in the last General Assembly would you have voted against and why, or what bill that was not passed in the last General Assembly do you wish had passed and why?

A bill that was not passed that I would have supported is legalizing medical marijuana. Medical marijuana has been proven to help with seizure disorders and other medical problems. Marijuana is a class four or five drug as are Valium and other anti anxiety drugs. Eighty one percent of Tennesseans believe that medical marijuana should be legal. Many states have already legalized marijuana, and so should Tennessee.
