ESSAY QUESTIONS
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.
The state’s role should be to support, advocate and promote areas of economic growth in communities across the state. The state needs to assist local governments in attracting industry to their communities that pay a living wage and provides healthcare.
What are your thoughts about a parent of a child in a low performing public school being provided a voucher equal to the amount of the state’s per-student expenditure that would be applied toward the child’s private school tuition?
I strongly oppose this and believe that all public school funding should be used to bring all public school systems up to an appropriate performance level where all communities are represented and all students receive a top rated education.
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?
The insurance agency where I serve as the CEO wanted to be certified to provide health care under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Our agency was the only agency in my community that went through the training in order to be credentialed to offer health insurance to those who either couldn't afford it previously or had a pre-existing condition and was denied coverage. The first year we offered it, we were able to help so many in our community as well as others in adjoining communities once they found out we offered the ACA. We made a tremendous impact on the lives of so many and I'm so grateful for that.
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?
My ability to listen, empathize and understand the issues and concerns of people in our communities. Growing up assisting in a family business that worked in a service industry during their most difficult time in someones life, the death of a loved one, helped me to internalize the true meaning of compassion. I've worked in this industry my entire life and understand it takes someone with a caring spirit and a patient ear to understand the different issues people face. I have assisted people faced with challenges they have never had to deal with and I'm happy to be the one give them some direction that would assist them with the adjustment in their life.
What bill that passed in the last General Assembly would you have voted against and why, or what bill that was not passed in the last General Assembly do you wish had passed and why?
The bill that did not pass was the bill to expand MEDICAID for the residents across the state of Tennessee. The reason for this is, it has led to an increase of uninsured lower income Tennesseans across the state and has resulted in several hospitals closures in the state of Tennessee.
