ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

Our Founders intended for the States to be the primary source in creating an environment for success by limiting regulation, keeping taxes low and creating a free market to where the citizens of the state and businesses can thrive. The State Legislature is closest to the people and will most closely reflect the will of the people by enacting laws that can immediately impact the need of the state.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

Decisions for education should be made at the state level in broad terms with the LEAs empowered to make the decisions that are best for the students in their particular community. A Federal top down approach reduces the quality of education and the ability of our educators to meet the needs of the students in their community.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

The Lord has done many incredible things in my life and the life of our family. One of the most recent was His leading for me to run for US Congress. While we came up short, He used that loss for good, showing me the next step which was winning a special election to now represent the people of the 14th District in the TN State Legislature. The most satisfying aspect of the journey is that people always want to know what led you to run for office. I've had many opportunities to share the way the Lord has moved in the life of our family.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

There is no doubt that my experience working in and now owning a family business has prepared me to represent the voice of the people of my district in Nashville. I can relate to their experiences, understand their needs, and have front row seat to how important a business friendly state is to the small business owner. Additionally, the leadership roles I've served in at my church, really have helped in preparing me for my role as a Legislator. Serving in a church of 6k members, carries many of the same challenges and "politics" that we see in Nashville.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

Based on the recent action of the Department of Education, I would have like to have voted for a bill I co-sponsored, which is best known as the "bathroom bill". When the bill was going through committee, many in the state said that we did not have a problem and we were wasting our time. As a Legislature, we were working to be proactive to avoid the problem now faced by all 50 states. If we had passed the "bathroom bill" during session, TN could have led the way in proactively addressing the foolishness we are faced with today.
