ESSAY QUESTIONS

ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

The state government should perform for its residents those services which the residents cannot do individually for themselves, including encouragement of industry to locate within our state and to hire locally.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

The primary responsibility for children's education rests with their parents. The state then has the responsibility, using our tax money, to provide public schools for the formal education of all children who are not otherwise educated by their parents or private or religious schools.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

My legacy is my eight awesome children, the oldest six of whom are college graduates. The two youngest are in gifted programs in public middle and high schools, and I enjoy helping and tutoring them, and am well pleased with their accomplishments.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

My listening, communicating, and negotiating skills will compensate for the fact that I am not a career politician, yet know how to get things done. My background in architecture and in small business will aid me in working with and for the children, the hard working people, the veterans, and the retirees in our state.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

I would have voted against the 17% reduction in the investment and capital gains income tax, because it did not provide for alternatives to sharing with our cities and municipalities. Sales taxes and gasoline taxes are already too high, and increasing them to pay for necessary services will cause more residents to shop out-of-state and online, which will seriously disrupt our state's economy, and cause losses in employment.
