ESSAY QUESTIONS


ESSAY QUESTION 1:
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.

The government has a role in maintaining a fair and open marketplace, and should allow market forces to drive growth.

ESSAY QUESTION 2:
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.

State government should set statewide educational standards, and support local school systems in establishing curricula which meet those standards. Parents have a role in being directly involved in their child's education at home and in the classroom, and should be active participants in the decision making process in their school system.

ESSAY QUESTION 3:
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?

My marriage to my wife, Carolyn, and watching our two sons grow into men and become fathers themselves. Seeing my grandchildren grow and learn. These are the most important things to me and the things that have given me the most satisfaction.

ESSAY QUESTION 4:
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?

My strong convictions that a small and efficient government that allows people and business the freedom to grow governs best. I am a staunch fiscal conservative that believes that we should keep the burden of taxes at a minimum while maintaining our rule of law and providing necessary services to our citizens.

ESSAY QUESTION 5:
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?

While the Republican's have held the supermajority in Tennessee, few bills have gone through that I voted against. The Governor's veto of legislation to establish the Bible as our state book was very disappointing to me personally. I understand the Governor's decision, but prayed that he would have chosen differently.
