ESSAY QUESTIONS
Explain your view of state government’s role in relation to economic growth and/or job creation.
While our Founders intended states to have limitless power to legislate outside of the specifically enumerated federal domain, I believe that just because you may have limitless power to legislate, doesn't mean you always should. I believe the state government should play an extremely limited role when it comes to economic growth/job creation and that the best government is one that governs least. Outside of keeping corporate taxes as low as possible, I don't believe in corporate welfare and certain companies getting a leg up because of who they happen to know.
Explain your views regarding the roles state government and parents have in elementary and secondary education.
Primary Ed: The state has a constitutional obligation to fund primary education in the State of Tennessee and I believe that we must maintain this obligation. That being said, I do not believe we should go beyond what is constitutionally necessary and that parents should put more effort into educating their children beyond our constitutional obligation.
Secondary Ed: I believe that our state universities should be funded as they are, but that the TGA should have more authority over these state schools to ensure tax-payer dollars are not wasted. I believe that parents should ensure that their children are prepared for secondary education, but also understand that their children are becoming adults and allow them the autonomy to learn from their mistakes.
What is one of the most satisfying things you have ever done or accomplished and what made it so satisfying to you?
Raising my family of 5 incredible children and my wife Ellie on our family farm in Dresden, Tennessee continues to be my most satisfying accomplishment in life. Why? Because it is His plan.
What personal qualities or experiences do you think will best serve you in your role as a state legislator?
For one, I hate politicians. I work hard on our family farm everyday teaching my children how to hunt, fish and feed themselves. We're just ordinary people. Other than farming and raising our family, I dedicate a lot of my time as an economics, government and business instructor at Bethel University teaching the next generation of leaders the proper role of government and how to become successful without selling their souls.
What bill passed in the last General Assembly that you would have voted against and why, or what bill did not pass in the last General Assembly that you wish had passed and why?
Last session, I was very upset to the fantasy football (gambling) legalized for no other reason than for the state to enjoy even more revenue. I fought against this legislation, but the votes were there for it to pass. I was also supportive of Rep. Susan Lynn's bathroom bill to ensure the innocence and privacy of our children was protected. This time, the bill failed-- unfortunately.
